How much power do I need?
That depends on your goals, but generally you want as large a system as you can fit on your property. For the average Canadian household, a 7.44 kW system will provide as much energy as the household consumes. Smaller systems will still take a large dent out of your utility bill.
What's the difference between grid-tied and off-grid?
Grid-tied means that your property is connected to the electrical grid. If you're getting an electricity bill then you're grid-tied. A grid-tied system is unable to store energy so any energy not immediately required by your home is automatically sold back to the grid for an amount set by your utility provider.
Off-grid, on the other hand, means that your property is not connected to the electrical grid. The only way to get electricity if you're off-grid is to create it yourself. Off-grid systems therefore require batteries to store energy for use when the sun isn't shining.
From a product standpoint, the difference between a grid-tied and off-grid system is the inverters. We use microinverters for our grid-tied systems whereas off-grid systems use an e-panel, which combines an inverter, charge controller, and regulator in a pre-wired easy to install package.

How many batteries do I need?
If you're grid-tied then you don't need any. If you're off-grid then you will have to calculate how much energy you'll need each day and decide how many days of energy storage you want (these are known as days of autonomy). Multiply these numbers to determine how many GJ (or kW h) of battery storage you need. Be warned! The cost of battery storage means that, for most households, it's more cost efficient to significantly reduce energy consumption (e.g. via increased energy efficiency) before purchasing batteries.
For example, the average household in Canada in 2015 used 253 MJ per day, of which 115 MJ was from electricity (the other 138 MJ being predominantly natural gas used for heating). An off-grid PV system with batteries for one day of autonomy (115 MJ) for such a house would cost approximately $100,000 and you'll still need to come up with the other 138 MJ, for which we'd recommend a FREEDOM WON solar thermal system.
