What's the difference between flat plate and evacuated tube collectors?
The difference is mostly cosmetic. Historically, evacuated tube collectors were able to reach higher temperatures, especially in cold climates, however modern high-performance flat plate collectors are able to reach temperatures close to those that evacuated tubes can reach. Evacuated tube collectors are less affected by the tilt of the collector but flat plate collectors are less noticeable.
How many collectors do I need?
On average, each collector provides enough thermal energy to heat the domestic hot water for two people. Space heating, hydronic heating, or pool heating will require additional panels.
How much space do I need for the collectors?
The length of an array is static, however the height and width of an array depends on the angle that the collectors are mounted. See the charts below for the length and width ranges for evacuated tube collectors and flat plate collectors.
