When Brenda set about designing a new laneway house she wanted to include a solar heater but space was an issue. The roof lacked a south facing slope and the south facing wall was covered in windows. A ground mount was possible but would take up a large part of the yard. What about mounting the system on the fence? A novel solution for a common problem. Now a two collector FREEDOM WON system graces the fence and helps heat the home.

Two conduits run underground from the fence to the mechanical room. The glycol solution, heated by the solar collectors, travels through the conduit to the solar tank in the mechanical room. As with all FREEDOM WON systems, the small PV panel on the thermal collectors automatically runs the circulating pump when the sun shines and the system is generating heat. From the solar tank, the heat is transferred into the space heating system to heat the home.
In Calgary, bylaws require solar systems not mounted on a building to get a development permit. By planning the solar system along with the rest of the project, it was possible to include everything in a single permit application.
